Mulch Buying Guide — Bulk vs Bags, Types, and Coverage
Bulk mulch costs $30–$50 per cubic yard delivered. Bagged mulch costs $3–$6 per 2-cubic-foot bag — which works out to $40–$80 per cubic yard. The crossover point where bulk becomes cheaper is around 3 cubic yards. Below that, bags may actually save you money once you factor in the delivery fee. Here's the full math.
Bulk vs Bagged — The Real Math
One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. A standard bag is 2 cubic feet. That's 13.5 bags per yard.
- Bulk: $35/yard + $50 delivery minimum = variable. At 5 yards: $225 total ($45/yard)
- Bagged: $4/bag × 13.5 = $54/yard equivalent. No delivery fee if you pick up
For small projects (under 3 yards), bags win on convenience and unit price when delivery fees are factored in. For larger projects, bulk wins every time.
Which Mulch Type for Which Job
| Type | Best For | Lasts | $/Yard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | Flower beds, trees | 1–2 years | $30–40 |
| Pine Bark | Acid-loving plants | 2–3 years | $35–50 |
| Cedar | Insect-prone areas | 2–3 years | $50–70 |
| Rubber | Playgrounds | 10+ years | $80–120 |
| Dyed (Red/Brown/Black) | Decorative beds | 1 year | $35–45 |
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
- 2 inches: Light top-up, weed suppression for established beds
- 3 inches: Standard depth for most garden beds — the sweet spot
- 4 inches: New beds, heavy weed pressure, playground safety
Anything deeper than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots and promote fungal growth. Never pile mulch against tree trunks — "volcano mulching" kills trees.
