5 Ways to Reduce Paint Waste by 30%

The average DIYer buys 20-30% more paint than they need. At $40/gallon, that's $40-80 wasted per room. Here are 5 proven techniques to cut that to zero.

1. Calculate Before You Shop

Don't guess. Wall area = perimeter × height. Subtract 20 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window. Multiply by number of coats. Divide by your paint's coverage rate. Use the calculator below — it takes 10 seconds.

2. Buy Primer Separately

Paint-and-primer-in-one costs $10-15 more per gallon and doesn't prime as well as dedicated primer ($20/gal). Separate primer = better coverage + cheaper for the same job.

3. Box Your Paint

Mix all gallons together in a 5-gallon bucket ("boxing") before starting. Even the same brand and color can vary slightly between batches. Boxing gives you one uniform color and eliminates the "I'll save this partial gallon" that sits in your garage for 3 years.

4. Use the Right Nap Roller

Smooth drywall = 3/8" nap. Textured walls = 1/2" to 3/4" nap. Too thick a nap and you're throwing paint into the air. Too thin and you need more coats.

5. Save Leftovers Properly

Clean the can rim, cover with plastic wrap, hammer the lid tight, and store upside down (creates an airtight seal). Leftover paint stored correctly lasts 5-10 years for touch-ups. Stored wrong, it skins over in 6 months.
